Mentoring and after-school program on school board agenda

DUNCAN — Ideas for an after-school program and an in-school mentoring program will be presented to the Duncan Board of Education during tonight’s meeting.

Carol Wanzor and Bonnie Talley will make a presentation on both programs.

Wanzor is the director of The Well Outreach, and Bonnie Talley is the director and founder of the Gabriel’s House organization. Gabriel’s House is an after-school program at Woodrow Wilson, Mark Twain and Emerson elementary schools.

In October, members of the Duncan community came together as The Well Outreach to provide something for students to do outside the classroom. The idea was to create a hangout for students, whose participation would be based on their behavior in school.

The Well Outreach began  working in April to recruit volunteers to mentor students in school. The program will take a commitment from about 50 volunteers to mentor at-risk students about an hour a week.

Those volunteers would work with the Gabriel’s House schools because those have the highest percentage of students who qualify for free or reduced meals.

The Duncan Board of Education meets at 6 p.m. today at Duncan Public Schools Central Office.
