Duncan bus involved in Tuesday accident

DUNCAN — A Duncan school bus accident Tuesday morning resulted in some property damage, but no children were injured.

The accident took place prior to the start of the school day Tuesday, as the bus was heading toward Emerson Elementary. The bus was traveling south on 12th Street between Cedar and Pine streets, Duncan Superintendent Sherry Labyer said.

“The bus driver looked up at a student who was standing to tell him to sit down,” Labyer said. “The bus hit a parked car.”

As the bus driver tried to correct the bus’ position, he turned the wheel, causing the bus to go into the yard of a residence in the block. The school district is planning to fill ruts in the yard left by the bus.

“It’s the right thing to do,” Labyer said.

She said several administrators, including Labyer and Emerson building principal Mona Evans.

Labyer said she went onto the bus to make sure all students were not injured. The students were taken to school, where they were checked by the school nurse, too. Parents were also called and invited to check on their children. She said at least one parent did stop by the school.

For Labyer, the bus accident was a reassurance that procedures put in place for such situations worked. She said the students have been trained on how to safety unload a school bus.

She said the school district was also complimented by a bystander, who commented about the efficiency of the bus procedures and the behavior of the students.

“The bus has damage,” Labyer said. “The car has some significant damage. But there were no injuries.”
