The Velma-Alma Comets rolled into the second round of the Stephens County Tournament on Tuesday and setup an exciting semifinal.
Velma-Alma jumped out to a 21-point lead in the first quarter and never looked back as they rolled past Bray-Doyle, 79-16.
The Comets will face tournament host Marlow in Thursday’s semifinals.
“We are expecting a tough game,” Velma-Alma coach Kenny Bare said. “But we’re looking forward to playing at Marlow in front of that crowd and everything.”
The Comets (15-2) will certainly enter the game with plenty of momentum coming off the first-round win, in which they led 27-6 at the end of the first quarter and 53-9 by halftime. The teams agreed to a running clock in the second half to speed things up.
“We came out and played really well,” Bare said. “We got a lot of easy shots off of our defense.”
Senior Dallen Mercer led Velma-Alma with 16 points, while junior Jaz Gayanich finished with 15 and junior Connor Sullivan scored 10. Senior Checotah Lynn recorded eight points, seniors L.L. Humphries and Zac Cable each had seven points and senior Dallas Bare added four points.
Junior Jessie Bearce, sophomore Josh Goodrich and junior Greg Perez each scored four points to lead Bray-Doyle, while junior Rodney Hall had two points and Randy Jackson and Weston Spivey each chipped in with one.
Bray-Doyle will play Comanche on Friday in the consolation round of the tournament.
