As the Velma-Alma softball team was reminded in its summer league game against Sterling Monday afternoon, it’s not how you start, but how you finish.
The Lady Comets fell behind early, but stormed back and hung on to a 4-3 win against the Lady Tigers in five innings at Southwest Park in Marlow.
“I like to see the fight our team showed today, that’s what we have to do, overcome adversity,” Lady Comets coach Lacy Darity said. “We just battled back. It’s great to see consistent at bats and it was an overall better performance.”
After allowing three runs in the first inning, pitcher Nikki Wright settled down and got into a zone, keeping the Lady Tigers scoreless for the game’s final four innings.
“I thought Nikki did a great job on the mound,” Darity said. “We struggled a little bit last week, but she came back this week, and threw a lot a strikes.”
V-A wasted no time starting the comeback after falling behind 3-0 in the top of the first, responded with two runs of its own in the bottom half. Jessie Anderson got the hitting going with a two out double to deep right field before Wright placed a sharply hit single down the right field line. With runners on first and third, Shayle Jensen took full advantage, scoring Anderson with an RBI single. Two batters later, Sidney cut the lead to one with a ground ball single to right field that scored Wright.
In the bottom of the third, a Sterling error allowed the Lady Comets to tie things up. After reaching on a fielder’s choice, Carly Richardson was brought home on an overthrow into right field when she stole third.
With the score nodded up at three, the Lady Comets claimed their first lead when Kendall Brown scored on a passed ball after reaching on an infield single.
It was all the insurance Wright needed, as she secured the complete game win by forcing a groundout to shortstop.
