Kicking game must improve

Demons set to host Weatherford

DUNCAN — The area in which the Duncan Demons need to improve greatly is an area in which coach Jim Holloway can’t remember his past teams making so many mistakes.

“It was a shock to our players and coaches that we made so many mistakes in the kicking game,” Holloway said regarding the Duncan High School football team’s loss to Guthrie last week.

Holloway cited four “critical plays” in the first half that all resulted from miscues on special teams. There was a bad snap on a punt, a miscommunication on a fake punt attempt, a fair catch the Demons made inside their own 10-yard line and a kickoff that the Bluejays returned for a touchdown.

“The number one thing is we have to execute our kicking game much better,” Holloway said.

Such special teams mistakes, Holloway said, make it “so tough on our defense because we keep giving them field position where it’s tough to defend.”

He said the Bluejays didn’t do anything the Demons didn’t expect. “They just had a better night executing in all three areas than we did,” Holloway said.

On offense, the Demon coach said there were some plays on which the Demons could have earned first downs had they made some key blocks.

The Demons will look to improve in those areas — and overall as a team — as they prepare to host Weatherford Friday night. Weatherford is coming off a 27-14 week against Harrah last week.

“They should have about 17 or 18 starters back from last year’s team,” Holloway said. “They’ve got several talented players who could play for any team on our schedule. They are well coached and do a fabulous job being sound on defense.”

He added the Eagles are good on offense and have players who can get results in either the running or the passing game.

The Demons have a tough schedule ahead of them but it’s one the coaching staff expects will prepare the Demons well for district play. At the same time, the staff wants to see improvement with each week.

“We’ve had good practics, which I expected,” Holloway said. “The (players) we’ve got out there are competitive.”
