Duncan rallies to win late

DUNCAN — When the stakes were raised and runs were needed , the Duncan softball team didn’t blink in the clutch against Lawton Eisenhower Monday night.

Scoring four key runs in the sixth inning to overcome a two run deficit, the Lady Demons thrived under pressure in a 6-4 win against the Lady Eagles at Lady Demon Stadium.

“I’m extremely proud of the team and the fight we showed tonight,” Lady Demons coach Robert Cowan said. “That wasn’t our last at bat, but we needed something to happen and the resilience the girls showed was phenomenal.”

Duncan’s freshmen trio of Corrina Rivas, Falon Howell and Kennedy Stewart delivered when it counted with three straight ground ball hits the middle in the bottom of the sixth. Rivas tied the game with a two run single, Howell giving Duncan a 5-4 lead with an RBI single of her own and Stewart provided the Lady Demons some insurance with an RBI double.

“It was very exciting, there was so much excitement building up and it just released when we scored,” Rivas said. “I was so happy when we all came together, meshed as one and came through in the clutch.”

Stewart opened the game with a lead off walk, Kortney Brown advanced Stewart to second on a bunt and Berkley Faulker showed power at the plate with a fly ball double to deep center field to score Stewart. One batter later, KK Williams drove home Duncan’s second run, scoring pinch runner Abbie Stewart on a ground ball to second base.

The momentum made its way across the diamond to the Lady Eagles dugout in the sixth, with Lawton Eisenhower plating four runs in the top of the sixth. The team tied things up with an two run single, took the lead on an RBI ground out to second base and added one more run on a wild pitch.

Duncan wasted no time responding and  after Howell’s and Stewarts’ RBI singles, the team hung on to win.

Duncan returns to action today at Marlow at 5:30 p.m..
