The Duncan Banner
Before the Duncan girls tennis teams won both doubles championships at last weekend’s Class 5A State Tournament, the program found the same kind of success at the junior high level two weeks ago.
Jordan Clauson and Mackenzie teamed up to achieve the ultimate goal at the Junior High State Tournament, taking all four of their matches to win state title in No.1 double play.
The duo’s effort helped propel Duncan into a top five finish, as the Lady Demons took fourth place as a team.
Clauson and Rains gave their competition headaches all day, starting with an 8-1, 8-0 win against Monte Casino. The middle rounds provided no problems for the duo either, as they earned an 8-2, 8-2 victory against Edmond Cimmaron and beat Edmond Sequoyah 8-0, 8-2.
With the state title on the line, Clauson and Rains rose to the occasion, beating Cascia Hall 8-0, 8-1 to clinch first.
Peyton Bower and Addie Watkins also found success in doubles play, finishing third at state in the No.2 slot.
After beating Casady 8-3, 8-3 and Cascia 8-2 8-2, the team suffered its first loss in an 8-4, 1-8, 8-4 defeat to Edmond Sequoyah.
The pair bounced back in stride, securing third with a hard fought 2-8, 8-3, 9-7 win against Claremore.
Logan Churchman also played a key role in Duncan’s top five finish, taking fifth in No.2 singles. Churchman took her opening match against Casady 8-0, 8-4 before dropping her first match in a 8-2, 8-0 loss to Cascia. Churchman responded well in her final two matches, beating Metro 8-0, 8-4 and earning fifth with an 8-2, 8-2 win against Edmond Sequoyah.
In No.1 singles, Rachel Hartman took one of four matches, beating Cassady 8-2, 8-2 in her third round and finished in 14th place.
