Velma-Alma’s basketball season opener against Davis on Tuesday has been canceled.
The Davis football team defeated Adair 28-27 in the third round of the Class 2A state football playoffs on Friday. Given that some of the football players at Davis compete on the basketball team, the game against the Comets was canceled. Velma-Alma coach Kenny Bare is disappointed the team’s opener has been canceled but wishes Davis the best of luck in football.
“We were looking forward to playing,” Bare said. “The kids are anxious to get to play real games instead of practicing or scrimmaging.”
Bare knew this was a possibility going into this season because of the success Davis usually has on the football field. He addressed the possibility of the game getting canceled in practice last week.
“That’s just something you have to prepare for when you schedule a football-playing school that has a good tradition in football,” Bare said.
The Comets will have to wait until Friday to open their season at Rush Springs. Another possible game that could be delayed is Apache, as the school is still in the Class A state playoffs.
