DHS grad Rowell wins regional title for UCO

DUNCAN — New state, new competition, same old streak.

Competing at the NCAA Division II Super Regional Two Tournament in Ashland, Ohio, Duncan native and Central Oklahoma wrestler Casy Rowell won all four of his matches en route to seizing the tournament’s gold medal Sunday. For those keeping count, he has now won 27 consecutive matches.

The top seeded junior won his first three matches without allowing a point, earning two shutouts and a fall. He capped the undefeated weekend when he clinched the title with a 7-3 finals victory against Ashland No. 6 Michael Labry.

UCO finished as runners up with 140 points, just two point behind champion No. 2 Notre Dame.

No. 3 Central Oklahoma had four champions and ended competition with nine top-four placers. By placing, those nine wrestlers qualified for the NCAA Division II Wrestling Champions on March 8-9 in Birmingham, Ala.

The Bronchos got championship efforts fom 149 Jordan Basks, 157 Cory Dauphin and  174 Kelly Henderson. Chris Watson, 165, 197  Znick Ferrell and heavyweight Cody Dauphin took third place and 141 Trison Graham and 184 Tanner Keck finished in fourth place.

Basks secured his title in dramatic fashion, defeating Truman State’s Ryan Maus 6-4 on a takedown with 22 seconds remaining in the one-minute sudden victory period.

With two victories at the competition, Watson earned his second straight trip to the national tournament.

After suffering an overtime loss in the semifinals Saturday, Ferrell got third after a 3-0 shutout of Limestone’s Justin Tribble in the conolation finals.

Keck had no trouble qualifying for nationals after falling in the semis, winning 14-6 in the fifth-place match and scoring a fall in the fourth-place challenge.

 At Duncan, Rowell was named the Class 5A Male Athlete of the Year his senior year, won three straight state wrestling titles and notched a 136-9 career record.
