VELMA —

From a basketball purist standpoint, the Oklahoma High School Class A Boys Basketball State tournament is everything a fan could want as far as the final eight teams.

The top eight ranked teams in the state make up the last ones standing, as the State Quarterfinals begin Thursday afternoon from Southern Nazarene University in Bethany.

For the No. 5 Velma-Alma Comets (24-3) their reward for taking down No. 2 Glencoe in the Area Finals is a quarterfinal matchup against No. 7 Ft. Cobb-Broxton (21-8), which will begin at 2 p.m.

Ft. Cobb-Broxton’s journey to the state tournament almost didn’t happen as they had to survive the second chance game at the Area II tournament against Hollis to punch their ticket to the state tournament.

V-A will be looking to heal its scars from last season in the state quarterfinals, when the then undefeated Comets were surprised by Merritt, as the Oilers escaped with a 52-50 victory.

These teams didn’t cross paths in the regular season, but they did share some common opponents in Sterling and Amber-Pocasset.

The winner of this game will advance to the semifinals to face either top-ranked Wetleeka or No. 8 Laverne on Friday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. from the Oklahoma City Fairgrounds Arena.

Other first round games will see No. 2 Glencoe (28-1) taking on No. 4 Cheyenne/Reydon (23-6) at 3:30 p.m. with the winner of this contest earning a date with either No. 3 Sterling (27-2) or No. 6 Wright City (22-8), who play at 7 p.m. Thursday night.

Whoever advances will  play at the Oklahoma State Fairgrounds Arena on Friday afternoon at noon.
