The Duncan Banner
Taking on the top track and field athletes Oklahoma had to offer, the Duncan Demons were not to be intimidated Tuesday.
Following a runner up finish at the Class 5A State Tournament last week, the Demons continued to perform at a high level, placing in four events at the Meet of Champions in Yukon.
Also making the most of the trip was Marlow freshman Dean Howard, who finished his first year with the Outlaws by taking fourth in the pole vault.
The meet may have been the biggest challenge the Demons had taken on all season, with athletes from all six Oklahoma classes competing.
Like they had all season, Duncan senior Derek McKnight and junior Kevin Roddy dominated the field events. One week after winning his second straight Class 5A title in the event, McKnight took second in the boys shot put. Roddy finished just one behind, taking third in the shot put while also claiming third place in the discus.
Leading the way for Duncan in the track events was junior Walker Clampitt, who took second in the boys 800 meter run.
Dean actually tied for third place with a height of 14 feet and six inches, but had one more miss than his opponent and finished his first Meet of Champions in fourth.
Alexa Goldsberry took sixth place in the girls discus throw, Amberleigh Rushin took eighth in the girls high jump and Connor Kelly finished ninth in the boys 300 meter race.
Following an impressive campaign at the state tournament where she placed in both hurdle events, Rebecca Brewer competed in the 100 and 300 meter hurdles at the meet as well.
