Demons finish fourth at regional tournament

DUNCAN — Just one week after the Duncan Lady Demons claimed a regional title at the Duncan High School tennis courts, the Demons found the going a little tougher when their regional tournament came calling.

Duncan was forced to settle for fourth overall in the team standings, with 23 points, with Oklahoma Christian School claiming the regional title with a total of 30 points.

A notable absence from the Duncan roster was Brant Davis, who was unavailable due to a shoulder injury.

In No. 1 singles action, Allan Hruby claimed a first round victory over Truman Nyugn of Western Heights by scores of 6-2, 6-1 before falling in the semifinals against Cameron Schuassler from Durant by scores of 6-0, 6-0.

Hruby found things tough in the 3rd and 4th place match, as he was forced to settle for fourth after dropping the match 6-0, 6-0 to Joel Tinker from OCS.

Cameron McCasland fought his way into the consolation championship after dropping his first round match to Brandon Jacob of OCS by scores of 6-2, 6-3.

McCasland rebounded with a victory over Kyle Woodward from Chickasha by scores of 6-1, 6-3.

There was to be one more victory for the DHS player in the consolation semifinals as McCasland won over Chris Hynh from Western Heights by scores of 7-5, 6-3.

Ultimately, McCasland would meet Tinker again in the 3rd and 4th place match, but again fall to him, this time by scores of 6-1, 6-2.

In No. 1 doubles action, Ryan Robinson and Andre Vuong had much better success, as they claimed a first round victory over the team of Gonzalez and Seabolt from Lawton MacArthur by scores of 6-0 and 6-0.

Round two saw the Demon duo win again, this time by scores of 6-3 and 6-0 over the team of Denike and Kane from McAlester.

In the finals though, the team of Herrin and Smith from OCS were too much to overcome as they claimed the regional title with a 6-1, 6-3 victory.

Sam Allan and Sam Moffatt won their first match in the No. 2 doubles bracket by scores of 2-6, 7-5 and 6-1 against Crowson and Spencer from Western Heights.

Oraelos and Hallender from OCS though swept aside the Demon duo in the semifinals as they won 6-0 and 6-1.

Allan and Moffatt though rebounded and claimed a 6-0, 6-1 victory over the team of Drake and Redden from Altus before winning third place against the team of Beals and Michael from Durant by scores of 6-2 and 6-4.

The next stop for the Duncan boys tennis team will be the state competition which will begin on Friday morning from the Oklahoma City Tennis Center in Oklahoma City.
