DUNCAN — Throughout the entire season, the Duncan Lady Demons tennis team has shown they are a cut above the rest.

Monday afternoon, with the sun shining on the brand new tennis courts at Duncan High School, the Lady Demons punched their ticket to the state tournament, winning the regional title by eight points over second placed Ardmore.

“I thought we played well for the most part overall,” Duncan coach Phil Barnes said. “We got everyone qualified which was the important thing for us. Brittany (Toone) played extremely well all day for us, and I was very impressed with how Alex (Bowers) played because she had been battling an illness the past few days.”

In No. 1 singles action, Duncan’s Brittany Toone fought her way to a regional championship with three solid victories on the day.

Toone won her first round match against Mel Outhaithaua of Chickasha by scores of 6-0, 6-0 before defeating Altus’ Kathryn Krawietz in the semifinals by scores of 6-3 and 6-0.

The regional championship was claimed by Toone when she won against Alex Morales from Ardmore, winning the match with by scores of 6-2 and 6-0.

Duncan’s Alex Bowers showed her heart also winning a regional championship, despite battling an illness throughout the tournament.

Bowers won her first round match against Taylor Warrington of Altus by scores of 6-0 and 6-0 before winning in the semifinal round against Cassidy Gooch of Carl Albert with another straight set win by scores of 6-0 and 6-0.

Christina Gomes of Durant was handled in the finals by Bowers as she finished the tournament with a 6-1, 6-1 victory.

For the No. 1 doubles team of Sydney Henricks and Samantha Cassidy, while they did qualify for the state competition, it wasn’t as the regional champions.

After defeating the doubles team of Byrd and Hayes from Lawton MacArthur in the first round by scores of 6-0 and 6-1, the duo won their semi’s match over Durant by scores of 6-0 and 6-0.

But, in the finals it was the team of Pfau and Pfau from Ardmore claiming the title, defeating Cassidy and Henricks in a three set battle, winning 6-4, 5-6, and 6-3.

Carly Kirkland and Marissa Moore had better luck in the No. 2 doubles bracket, as they claimed the regional championship.

After handling the team of Medina and Wilson from Chickasha in the first round by scores of 6-1 and 6-1, the Lady Demon duo advanced to the finals with a win over the team of Nelson and Walls by scores of 6-0 and 6-0.
