While there were plenty of men’s games going on at the Stephens County Throwback Tournament on Saturday, the ladies also took the floor as well.
With just two teams registered, the Throwbacks and the Bricklayers competed in a best-of-three series to decide the queens of the county.
Ultimately, it was a balanced scoring attack combined with a stifling defense that gave the Throwbacks a 2-0 series sweep, and the championship.
In game one of the series, the Bricklayers came out strong early on, taking the game right to the Throwbacks.
However, the momentum that was built early on couldn’t be sustained throughout, as the Throwbacks claimed the opening round with a convincing 47-17 victory.
Throughout the first quarter, both teams went at it, with the Bricklayers biggest lead of the game coming at 6-4 with 3:39 left in the first.
Going into the second, it was still anyone’s game with the Throwbacks holding a slim 10-9 lead.
Unfortunately, from the second quarter on, the Bricklayers had trouble putting together any kind of run as the Throwbacks took control.
At the half, it was advantage to the ladies in blue as they held a 24-11 advantage, before going on a 12-6 run in the third to increase the lead to 19 at the end of the third.
Pacing the Throwbacks in scoring was Lynne Ramsey with 13 points to lead all scorers in the contest.
Not far behind was teammate Lindsey Boyles with 11 points, followed by Kaci Brosh and Julie Turner each with eight points.
Jalessa Fox put in four points with Robbie Clements adding three points.
Kristy McCarley led the way for the Bricklayers with 11 points in the contest, with Bobbi Jo Winborne and Kelsey McCarley each adding three points.
Game two didn’t go as planned for the Bricklayers, as they fell victim to a 10-2 opening quarter, ultimately leading to a second straight defeat.
It wasn’t until the third quarter the Bricklayers managed to crack double digits, as the Throwbacks defense was solid throughout.
Clements helped take control for the Throwbacks, as she led all scorers with 18 points in the contest.
Brosh put in 12 points, with Fox close behind scoring 11 points in the game.
Ramsey added in nine points, with Boyles putting in eight points.
Krystal McMains was the other participant playing with the Throwbacks team in the tournament.
Kristy McCarley once again led the Bricklayers in scoring, this time with six points with Jessica Trimble scoring four points.
Winborne and Kelsey McCarley each put in three points.
Other team members for the Bricklayers included Brianna Morris, Kathryn Dilks, and Bettye Perez.
