CENTRAL HIGH —
There was more than just a strong wind blowing through Broncho Field Thursday afternoon.
Against Elmore City-Pernell, the Velma-Alma Comets offense worked up a storm in the first round of the Red Dirt Classic, reeling off 11 runs en route to an 11-5 victory over the Badgers.
“We came out today and for some reason we had our sticks come alive,” V-A coach Kyle Bare said. “I’m very excited with this freshman group. We come to compete everyday. This is a fun group of boys and we’re going to do everything we can to win.”
While the Comets held a 1-0 lead after the first inning, it was the second inning where the damage was done.
Evan Albertson made it 2-0 when he trotted home via a walk, before teammate Colby Martin gave the Comets a 3-0 lead with an RBI bloop single to center field.
Christian Florez then slapped an RBI single of his own, before Clayton Penny scored on a walk to make it 5-0 Comets.
Martin then scored again for the second time in the inning this time via walk, before Kelton Brown got an RBI single of his own to make it 7-0.
Brennon Albertson made it 8-0 when he scored on a walk.
ECP tried to mount a comeback in the fourth inning with five runs, but it was just too much to dig out of on the day.
Cody Matthews registered an RBI double in the bottom of the third inning, with Florez earning one in the bottom of the fourth.
Penny got another RBI single in the contest as well to complete V-A’s offense.
Florez (1-0) threw 2 1/3 innings of shutout baseball for the Comets (1-1), walking four batters in the process.
Martin came into finish the game from the third inning on, striking out four batters in the process.
Velma-Alma will continue play in the Red Dirt Classic this evening at 8 p.m. facing either Central High or Temple.
