When the final round of the Class 3A State Golf Tournament begins Tuesday morning, two Stephens County teams will begin play in very different spots on the leaderboard.
Marlow finished day one of the Duncan Golf and Tennis Club in fifth place of 12 teams with a team score of 633 while Comanche ranks eleventh with a team score of 732.
Plainview led the way after day one, holding a 19 stroke lead for first place after shooting a 594.
As a team, Marlow could improve its ranking, as fourth place Idabel ended the first day three strokes ahead of the Outlaws with a score of 630.
The Outlaws had two players get off to strong starts during the tournament’s first 36 holes, as Hunter Ortega sits in fifth while a score of 150 and Sean Hazel is tied for sixth place after shooting a 151. Both Ortega and Hazel will have the opportunity to move up the individual rankings, as the top four players are all within eight shots of Hazel.
Next in line for Marlow was Easton Huddleston, who shot an 83 in each round to finish with a 166. Dakota Hicks finished two strokes behind with a 168 and Tyler Curtis rounded out the scoring for the Outlaws, shooting a 175.
Comanche ran into difficult early and often, finishing outside of the Top 10. McKenna Rochell led the way for the Indians with a 167, the teams only score below a 180. Andrew Godin was next with a 186 and Camron Nash finished three strokes behind with a score of 189. Jesse Ferrell struggled in the team’s number one slot, shooting a 190, and Tristan Fulford struggled in his first tournament of the year with a 228. Fulford filled in for Comanche’s JonWayne Townsend, who was not available because he is competing in a cheer competition in Florida.
