DUNCAN — The Velma-Alma boys and girls basketball teams will have pretty easy first rounds in the playoffs.

Both squads will get first-round byes and will await the winner of Macomb and Paoli in the Class A, Area 3, District 2 Tournament on Feb. 9. Both squads are also assured that they will move on to the region tournament as the district champion and runner-up both advance.

Other area Class A teams don’t have it quite as easy.

Bray-Doyle’s boys and girls will square off against tough Tipton squads in the Area 2, District 5 Tournaments. The Tipton boys are 12-5, while the girls are 14-4. The winners of those games will move on to play host Chattanooga.

Waurika will have an interesting start to the postseason as it plays rival Ryan. In their first meeting the Cowboys beat Waurika, 47-24, but since then, Ryan’s star player has transferred and the team hasn’t been the same. The Ryan girls, meanwhile, edged the Lady Eagles, 44-40 in their regular-season meeting, adding to what could be an exciting Area 2, District 2 Tournament opener. The winners will advance to play host Sterling.
