MARLOW — About two weeks ago at the Black Diamond Tournament in Rush Springs, the Velma-Alma Lady Comets handed the Central High Lady Bronchos one of their worst defeats of the season at 51-29.

Thursday night at Marlow though, CHHS showed that turnabout is fair play as the Lady Bronchos handed V-A its worst defeat of the season with a 54-32 result, meaning CHHS advances to its first Stephens County girls championship game since 1999, and ninth overall.

“I told the girls it was due for Central High to be in the finals,” Central coach Chad Weldon said. “These girls have worked hard and I’m very proud of them. It’s tough to stop a team when you have a balance in scoring and that’s the way we like it. We’ll be ready for Saturday night.”

Much of the excitement from this game was sucked out in the first half, as the Lady Bronchos stormed into the locker room up 26-9.

Lacie Phillips made sure Central High got off on the right foot, nailing two consecutive three-point shots at the start of the game, to give her team a lead they would never relinquish.

Despite being down 11-7 at the end of the first quarter, the normally high-powered Lady Comet scoring attack found itself shut down as tough defense by the Lady Bronchos frustrated V-A for most of the evening.

“They (Central High) did exactly what we had talked about doing,” V-A coach Jerry Garrett said. “Hats off to Central, they did a good job guarding us, especially Aria (Johnson). We wanted to start the game off good, and they turned it around on us. The whole game we were playing chase, which was killer for us. There’s times we made them turn the ball over, but we weren’t getting any points out of that. Our main problem is that we’ve got to be able to score better.”

V-A looked like they were going to make things interesting at the end of the third quarter, only down 41-26, but the Lady Bronchos shut the door early in the fourth to end any hopes of a comeback.

Faith Harris led the scoring attack for the Lady Bronchos (14-4) with her fourth straight double-double at 15 points and 10 rebounds. Lora-Lynn Loomis added 10 points, while Aleia Daniels put in nine points.

Caitlyn White and Lacie Phillips each scored eight points, while Chelsea Nunley put in four points.

Kylee Saville paced the Lady Comets (12-6) with 14 points followed by Aria Johnson with six points and 10 rebounds. Teddi Southerland added three points, while Jordan Layn and Samantha Moore each scored two points.

Central High will face the winner of the Marlow/Ryan contest at 7 p.m. Saturday night while V-A will play in the third place game at 4 p.m. Saturday afternoon.
