DUNCAN — The Duncan boys soccer team lost a heartbreaker at Lawton MacArthur 2-1.

The game was tied 1-1, then Lawton Mac scored the winning goal with four minutes left.

“It was a thriller,” said Demon coach Marcus Williams after the Thursday game. “This was probably the best game they played all year. They played with passion and hunger and I’m very proud of them.”

Duncan’s lone goal came in the first half, when Josh Adamson passed to Jose Ojeda for a quick shot. Williams praised sophomore goalkeeper Colby McLaughlin for his play.

“For being his first year, he is doing well,” Williams said.

The Lady Demons lost to MacArthur 3-2. The Highlanders’ first goal came with 20 minutes in the first half on a free kick to the back side. A Mac player knocked the ball into the goal with her hand, but the officials did not see it.

Still, Lady Demon coach Delydia Gay would not use that as an excuse.

“If we didn’t give up those other two goals, it wouldn’t have mattered,” she said. “You can’t give up three goals and expect to win.”

The Duncan girls had to make adjustments after senior Autumn Parker left the game with a knee injury. Gay praised the play of Caitlyn Huckabaa and Charity Meadows in Parker’s absence. Betty Geary took over as goalkeeper in the second half and played aggressive, Gay said. Dharma Meadows moved to several positions and played well, the coach added.

Duncan’s first goal was in the first half on a penalty kick by Stephanie Wainscott. The other goal came in the second half on a cross from Wainscott to Shay Johnson.

The soccer teams will have their biggest test yet when they host Deer Creek Tuesday. Williams described the Deer Creek boys as a well-organized, disciplined team that moves the ball well.

“It will be a tough match, but if we played like we did (Thursday), we should make it a game,” he said.

Gay said the girls game will be just as tough.

“We’ll have to come out and play hard,” she said.
