DUNCAN — It happened at a different time and place than the first meeting, but the Duncan baseball team found almost the same results in its rematch against Altus Tuesday night.

One day after beating the Bulldogs 9-5 at home, the Demons (12-13) continued to have their district rival’s number, scoring early and often en route to a 12-7 road victory.

“We’re playing pretty good baseball right now. It feels good to get two big district win to start the week,” Demons coach Tim Hightower said. “This should give us some momentum heading to McAlester for the 5A Shootout.”

Duncan wasted no time getting ahead, taking an early lead in the first when senior Dillon Stanley brought home senior Ryan Haley home on a sacrifice bunt.

After gaining a slight edge in the first, the Demons blew the game open with a seven-run second inning.

Sophomore Mason Hightower extended the lead to 3-0 with a two RBI singles and sophomore Bryce Byford added to that lead with an RBI double. Senior Riley Peters kept the inning going with an RBI single and another run scored on an error on a ball hit by senior Tanner Norton. The Demons took advantage of another Altus mistake right away, scoring two more runs on a passed ball.

Altus responded with three runs in the bottom of the second, but Duncan made up for it with three more scores in the top of the fourth. Senior Trevor Stone plated Byford on a sacrifice bunt, Norton drove home a run on an RBI doubles and Scott Cooper added to the Duncan advantage with an RBI single.

The Bulldogs chipped away at the lead with two runs in the fifth and seventh innings, but it would not be enough. Along with his efforts at the plate, Stone kept Altus in check on the mound, improving to 3-2 on the year with the win.

The Demons have a busy schedule ahead of them, as they will next play at the McAlester Shootout starting Thursday. The Demons open play against Shawnee at 12:30 p.m. Thursday before playing Claremore at 10 a.m. and Collinsville at 3 p.m. Friday and host McAlester at 10 a.m. Saturday.
