While most people associate fireworks with the Fourth of July, others prefer to associate another American pastime with the holiday.
The game of golf.
One of the many golf tournaments that will be taking place this year is the traditional Firecracker Tournament, which will be held at the Duncan Golf and Tennis Club.
As of Tuesday afternoon, all slots for the 8 a.m. shotgun start had been filled with 14 teams of two, with six slots still open for the 1 p.m. shotgun start.
DG&T golf pro Mike Hansen said there are many factors contributing to the high number of participants in this year’s event.
“Our membership has been growing, our course is in better shape, and the weather has been a lot better than last year,” he said. “Plus we’ve had several junior events, which has gotten more kids involved. There’s already more people signed up this year than we had as a total for last year.”
Last year saw 34 teams (136 players) taking part in the tournament, with low scores happening all throughout both sessions.
J.J. Russell, Rick Hickenbottom, Brent Cole and Natalie Cole posted the best score on the day with a 13-under 58 to win the afternoon A flight.
Hansen added there are going to be teams of all shapes and sizes enjoying the tournament this year.
“There’s going to be some teams with players who are very good at golf,” he said. “I’m personally looking forward to playing alongside my wife and my kids and just enjoying myself. Golf is about having fun, and for some it’s competitive while for others it’s a release. This should be a really great tournament and we’re all looking forward to it.”
