DHS’ Garcia, Gonzalez shine for West in Class 5A All-State game

NEWCASTLE — For much of the 2013 season, two players were always mentioned when it came to the Duncan Demons soccer team.

Saul Garcia and Jesse Gonzalez.

After being named Duncan Banner Offensive and Defensive Players of the Year respectively, Garcia and Gonzalez got one more chance to showcase their talents Friday night at Racer Field in Newcastle during the Class 5A Boys All-State Game.

In an entertaining contest, the West claimed a 3-1 victory over the East team.

“This was a really great experience for me,” Garcia said about playing in the contest. “I was a little nervous at first, but hearing the cheers of the crowd got me going during the game. I’ve been practicing at least once a week, so I was more than ready for the challenge of playing out there.”

Garcia played the entire second half in the goal for the West team, making several acrobatic saves which received rousing ovations from the crowd in attendance.

The only sour moment for the Demons standout came with 25:07 mark of the second half when Landon Basinger from Cushing managed to sneak his shot into the net past the outreaching hands of Garcia, who was at full stretch attempting to make the save.

Gonzalez also played most of the game in defense and midfield, almost contributing to a goal during the second half.

After a long ball from Gonzalez, Sergio Flores from Classen SAS latched on to the ball and almost finished off a superb play, only to see his shot saved at the net.

“It was very nerve racking being out there,” Gonzalez said about the game. “I honestly didn’t know what to expect. As the game went on though I got really comfortable with the play and everyone out there. That long pass was just a simple toe poke, and it just happened to almost lead to a goal in the process.”

Flores did score the opening goal at the 38:22 mark of the first half with a diving header, before it was 2-0 in the second half with Flores scoring his second of the night off a free kick pass from Lawton MacArthur’s Tyler Hall.

The West’s third goal of the night came with a little over five minutes remaining in the game when Western Heights player Robert Owusu slotted home to seal the win for the West.
