DUNCAN — Fresh off the success of their high school predecessors, the next generation of Duncan track and field athletes will get the chance to show what they’re made of Friday afternoon.

Duncan will bring awareness of the sports’ events to the grade school level when it hosts its elementary schools track meet at Haliburton Stadium.

“I think it helps with getting the younger kids excited about track and field a lot,” Demons track coach and event organizer Todd Ledford said. “A lot of the kids aren’t introduced to the sport until middle school. I think it’s great for the program and a great chance for the kids to compete.”

Students from all five of Duncan’s elementary school will compete.

Ledford said about 400 children from the different schools will compete. The meet will be broken into a 3rd and 4th grade boys and girls division as well as a 5th and 6th grade boys and girls category.

The track events offered will include the 4X100 meter relay, 50-meter dash, 100-meter dash, 200-meter dash, 300-meter dash, 400 meter run, 800 meter run and mile run. The events field events will be the long jump and a baseball throw, made to represent the shot put event.

Play is scheduled to begin around 3:30 p.m..
