The Duncan Banner
Duncan’s Lady Demons bunched together three second inning singles to provide all the offense necessary here Tuesday, defeating district foe Lawton MacArthur 2-1 in a high school fast-pitch softball game.
Burkley Faulkner pushed a single up the middle to score Fallon Howell and Kourtney Brown, both of whom had previously singled, giving Duncan all the runs needed to win a critical district game.
“Winning this one gives us an edge,” Coach Robert Cowan said. “We have to play them twice, but now the pressure is on them. They can’t afford to make a mistake. If we can steal one from Chickasha, we’ll be in good position to win the district.”
The Lady Demons, Lawton Mac and Chickasha have surged to the top of the highly competitive district. Duncan is now 10-1 overall and 5-0 in the district with another big home game – against Chickasha Sept. 3 – on the schedule. Duncan travels to Colorado tomorrow for a Friday-Saturday five-game tournament against 14 elite teams in Fort Collins.
“Our kids were excited,” Cowan said, “but not as excited as I was. We won both games last year and our girls expected to win. It was another great game for us. We probably aren’t hitting as well as I would like, but our pitching and our defense have been consistent and we continue to improve
“We’re ready for our trip now,” he said.
Corrina Rivas continued her stellar mound work, allowing just one run in the sixth inning. She gave up seven hits, struck out 10 and walked one.
Duncan also got seven hits. Kennedy Stewart had two singles, Sara McCormick and Autumn Parker one apiece.
A rematch at MacArthur is Sept. 9.
