DUNCAN — If fans weren’t convinced in the preseason that the Duncan Lady Demons soccer team was going to be good, then Friday night silenced the critics.

Against the Lady Generals of U.S. Grant, the Lady Demons used a four goal blitz in the first half to initially take the Lady Generals out of the contest, before adding three more in the second to claim a 7-1 blowout at Halliburton Stadium.

“That’s the most goals we have ever scored in a game, let alone at home,” Duncan coach Delydia Gay said. “What’s even crazier is that we’ve had games where we haven’t been able to register seven shots, let alone seven goals. These girls did an amazing job out there and I’m so proud of their performance tonight.”

By the time Stephanie Wainscott slotted home Duncan’s seventh goal of the evening with 12:41 left in the second half, the victory was already assured for the Lady Demons.

Autumn Parker got the goal fest started less than 10 minutes into the contest, when she knocked home her first goal of the season past Lady Generals goalkeeper Jolene Garcia, giving DHS a 1-0 lead on the night.

Just over five minutes later at the 33:26 mark, the Lady Demons doubled the advantage as Charity Meadows showed off her accuracy nailing the top left corner for a 2-0 scoreline.

“The second goal was a huge boost to our confidence and really put the pressure on them (U.S. Grant),” Meadows said. “We’re extremely confident as a team right now and it’s just great to see.”

Meadows almost claimed a second goal less than three minutes later when her curling attempt hit the inside of the post, where teammate Shai Johnson was waiting to tap in Duncan’s third goal of the night.

“We’ve been working on crashing the goal in practice and it worked,” Johnson said about her first goal. “I was hoping to score tonight, but I was more concerned with helping the team get a victory. It’s fantastic to see how far this team has come in such a short amount of time.”

Johnson nabbed her second of the night in the second half at the 22:19 mark when she collected a pass from Wainscott and scored to make it a 5-0 Lady Demons lead.

Another Lady Demon also grabbed a couple of goals on the night, senior forward Courtney Moore.

In typical Moore fashion, both of her goals came from thunderous shots hit outside the box as her first was a dipping shot which left Garcia with no chance of saving, giving Duncan a 4-0 lead just before halftime.

With less than 20 minutes to go in the contest, Moore turned in another long distance shot, this one scorching the top right corner of the net, making it a 6-0 advantage.

Senior goalkeeper Madison Williams was solid in net for the Lady Demons, with her only blemish coming with less than 15 minutes to go in the second half when U.S. Grant’s Brenda Gonzalez rocketed home a free kick attempt, spoiling the shutout.

“I knew these girls were capable of a really strong performance,” Gay said. “We could go on and on about every girl and how they performed out there. These girls really made me proud tonight.”
