DUNCAN — A good field of teams will be in Duncan Saturday for the J.C. Perkins Tournament, which officially opens the Demon tennis season.

Eight teams will participate. Ada, the defending Class 4A boys champion, will be there. Some of the other teams are Tulsa Edison, Ardmore and Durant.

“It ought to be a good tournament,” said Demon coach Phil Barnes.

The Demons haven’t practiced as much on the courts as they would have liked. Inclement weather kept them off the courts in recent weeks.

“I think, mentally, we are ready to play, but physically, I’m not sure yet,” Barnes said. “But everybody is in the same boat we are.”

The Duncan tennis coach said his players look forward to the first tourney of the season. The Demons will stay busy from this point forward, as they will next prepare for a tournament in Ada March 7-8.

NOTES: The Lady Demons, the defending Class 5A state champions, will attend a national tournament March 21-22 in Louisville, Ky. Barnes said the team is “real close” to raising the money it needs to cover expenses. Anybody who would like to donate money may contact Barnes at (580) 251-5299.
