While most Stephens County teams are fighting it out for the right to be called champions of the Black Diamond Tournament in Rush Springs, Comanche and Marlow are headed elsewhere.
Today will mark Round 1 of the Lone Grove Invitational tournament, which will see both boys and girls teams from CHS and MHS try to earn tournament titles.
Other teams entered are host Lone Grove, Hugo, Idabel, Washington and Walters.
In the girls’ bracket, today at 1:30 p.m. will see the Lady Outlaws (5-5) try to make it three straight wins against a tough Talihina squad who is ranked No. 20 in Class 2A and sports an overall record of 7-3 on the season.
“We have a pretty tough first round draw,” Marlow coach Kirk Harris said. “They play pretty solid defense and have played a good schedule. It’s a pretty balanced tournament with Walters, Hugo and Lone Grove along with Washington and Comanche. There are a lot of teams who have an opportunity to win. You could be playing for seventh as easily as you could be playing for first if you don’t take care of business.”
Meanwhile, the Lady Indians (2-7) will be facing off against Walters (8-2) at 10 a.m. with the winner facing either Marlow or Talihina in the semi-finals.
“We’ve got to play hard defense and play up to our gameplan,” Comanche coach Sean Hushbeck said. “The Lone Grove tournament is always tough. Walters has some quality players that can score so we need to be ready for that. No matter what though we get three games, and hopefully we can get one possibly two wins out of them. We want to win, but we understand where we are at as a team right now.”
On the boys’ side of things, head coach John Garrett and his Marlow Outlaws (6-3) squad will meet Idabel (2-4) in first round action at 2:30 p.m. today.
“One of our team goals is to win some tournament games,” Marlow coach John Garrett said. “Idabel is not the same team they have been. They have the ability to blow teams out, but we have the ability to win a close game against them as well. It’s going to be a battle in the second round whether we win or lose.”
With a win, MHS will face either Hugo or Lone Grove in the semi-finals.
Comanche (5-5) will meet Washington (3-5) in the late afternoon game at 5:30 p.m.
Talihina or Walters awaits in the second round for the victorious team.
