An already impressive senior year for Duncan tennis players Brittany Toone and Samantha Cassidy continued to improve Tuesday, as the duo was selected as two of the top tennis players in the state Tuesday.
Two weeks after helping the Lady Demons win their first state title since 1994, the pair was named to the West All-State Tennis team by the Oklahoma Coaches Association.
“They’re two of the top seniors in the state and they’ve each had great careers,” Demons head coach Phil Barnes said. “They’re also great kids with a lot of character. You never have to worry about them doing the right thing and they’ve been excellent leaders.”
Toone was also nominated for the Jim Thorpe award, a statewide award for the top player in each sport. The Duncan tennis program has seen four previous Jim Thorpe award winners in tennis – Bobby Armstrong, Jennifer Perkins, Melanie Barnes and Britton Scott
Cassidy and Toone will compete in the OCA All-State tennis event July 30 at Union High School in Tulsa.
Each senior has earned her fair share of accolades.
Toone is a four-time Oklahoma All-Star and played for three Academic State Championship teams. She finished in the top four at state in singles play all four years she played, including a second place finish this season.
Cassidy brought home a state championship in No.1 doubles her sophomore and senior years and is a three-time Oklahoma All Star.
“It’s just a great way for them to go out,” Barnes said. “They’re certainly deserving of the honor and have made a huge impact for our program during their time here.”
