DUNCAN — The Velma-Alma boys golf team stayed consistent throughout the Class 2A State Golf Tournament in Broken Arrow, but it would not be enough for the Comets to secure a top five finish on the leaderboard.

After shooting a final round of 349, the Comets placed ninth of twelve teams competing with a three-round score of 1052.

V-A stayed in the hunt to move up on the final day, finishing just nine strokes behind seventh place Chisholm and three behind eighth place Hinton, but failed to advance in the standings.

Leading the way for the Comets was L.L. Humphreys, who finished 17th overall with a score of 237. Humphreys followed up day one scores of 81 and 76 with an 80 in Tuesday’s final round.

Finishing behind Humphreys was Zac Cable, who shot a 264. Cable improved with each round, starting with a 92, shooting an 87 in the second round and scoring an 85 on the final 18 holes.

Just one stroke behind Cable was Trevor Morrison, who opened with an 87, finished with a 90 for the second round and shot an 88 Tuesday.

Rounding out the group was Alan Beck, who shot a 303. After shooting a 102 and 104 on day one, Beck bounced back to break 100 for the first time with a final round score of 97.
