For at least one inning Tuesday afternoon, it looked as though the Bray-Doyle Donkeys were going to extend their winning streak to five games.
Unfortunately, the Alex Longhorns were in no mood to let that happen.
AHS fought back from being down 2-1 to ultimately claim a 10-3 victory, and snap the Donkeys’ four-game losing streak in the process.
“We just made too many mistakes defensively,” B-D coach Cody Tutwiler said. “Everything we were doing right before spring break, we started doing wrong. This team was taking leaps and bounds forward, and today we just took a step back. It’s frustrating, but we’ll fix those things and get better at understanding the game of baseball.”
Down 1-0 after the top of the first inning, the Donkeys’ offense came to life as Cody Watson slapped a grounder through the left side to score Rodney Hall and tie the game at 1-1.
Randy Jackson then gave B-D the lead with an RBI groundout, but, then the Longhorns stormed back.
First, Brayden Tanner tied the game with an RBI single through the right side, and then the big hit came.
With the bases loaded and one out, Jackson Mainka stepped up and drilled a shot to left field which bounced off the base of the wall, clearing the bases to score three runs and give Alex a 5-2 lead.
Dalton Alcorn then benefited from an error in center field to collect an RBI, and increase the advantage to 6-2.
Despite Dylan Sparks collecting an RBI, which allowed Jackson to score in the bottom of the fourth inning, it only cut the deficit to seven runs at 10-3.
Ryland Ketchum, Tanner, Jackson and Zach Mainka each registered RBI’s in the top of the third inning to increase the Longhorns advantage.
Tanner got Alex on the board in the top of the first inning with an RBI single.
Jackson took the loss on the mound for the Donkeys, giving up six runs on seven hits with two strikeouts and four walks in two innings of work.
Sam Harris collected the win for the Longhorns, throwing a complete game allowing just three runs on four hits with six strikeouts.
B-D was scheduled to finish its Tuesday doubleheader against Calumet.
