Chemistry, especially between teammates, is something that simply cannot be taught or coached.
For DHS soccer teammates Saul Garcia and Jesse Gonzalez, their chemistry saw them achieve success this season for the Demons, as well as earning them both All-State honors.
Friday night at Racer Field in Newcastle, the recently graduated duo got to team up one last time together as they helped the West team defeat the East squad by a score of 3-1.
“Having Jesse and Saul be teammates for this game was fun,” Duncan assistant coach Ramon Garcia said. “They’ve constantly been working on their chemistry together and it’s shown on the field. I’m not surprised they were out there giving it everything they had, because that’s how they were everyday in practice during the season.”
While they were only on the field together for the second half, the former Demon standouts still showed why they were deserving of their respective awards.
“Playing with some new guys is fun, but it’s hard to beat having a teammate out there who you know and trust,” Gonzalez said. “We’ve just both been working hard all year and been extremely dedicated to playing. It was fun getting to play alongside one another one last time out there.”
Garcia echoed his teammates thoughts about being on the same team in their final game.
“It was a fun experience getting to have Jesse on my side,” he said. “I knew he would be able to communicate well with me and help keep things organized out there.”
With their friends and family watching from the stands, Garcia made several diving saves, while Gonzalez showcased his defensive and offensive skills throughout the contest.
Gonzalez will now move on to college, where he will be attending Southwestern Oklahoma State University, and major in physical therapy.
“I’m excited about going to college,” Gonzalez said. “I have no idea where it’s going to take me but I know it’s going to be a fun journey for me.”
Saul will also be attending college, where he will be majoring in criminal justice.
