The Lady Demons came away with a pair of wins at the annual Oklahoma Shootout softball event this past weekend.
Then the Lady Demons picked up another district win Monday, improving to 26-4 for the season.
A big win came in the form of the Duncan High School softball team shutting out Blanchard 4-0 Saturday. Blanchard is one of the top teams in Class 4A, having won a state championship two years ago and reaching the state semifinals last year.
Freshman Corrina Rivas pitched a no-hitter, striking out 11 Blanchard batters.
“We had a couple of errors early in the game but they didn’t affect us,” said Lady Demon coach Robert Cowan. “We played pretty well defensively after that.”
Cowan said there weren’t any standouts on offense but that the Lady Demon hitters “did things fundamentally correct. We’d get a base hit, then we’d advance them on a bunt or steal a base, then we’d score on a passed ball.”
The Lady Demons’ second game on Saturday was a 3-2 victory over Tishamingo. K.K. Williams had a single and a double in that game, Autumn Parker tripled and Berkley Faulkner and Kortney Brown each singled. Brown’s single came off a bunt and she ultimately scored the winning run.
Cowan said his players didn’t have as good of a game defensively. “I think our emotions were running high from the Blanchard game,” he said.
Rivas got the win on the mound, striking out 13 batters.
Games in the Oklahoma Shootout scheduled for Friday were not played because of rain.
The Lady Demons then played at Noble Monday, making up their season opener that had been postponed because of weather. Duncan won that game 15-1.
Hitting was the difference for the Lady Demons, as Cowan said multiple players came through with hits in the game. The highlight was a grand slam from Berkley Faulkner, her eighth home run of the season. K.K. Williams and Autumn Parker each had two hits apiece.
Corrina Rivas held the Lady Bears to two hits.
Duncan will host Lone Grove Tuesday. The game was originally scheduled for Thursday but was rescheduled because Lone Grove had a scheduling conflict.
Thursday will instead be the day that the Lady Demons head to Chickasha to decide the district championship. That game was originally to be played last Thursday but was postponed because of rain.
Duncan will also host a middle school softball festival this Friday and Saturday.
