CENTRAL HIGH — One week removed from a 33-31 loss, the Lady Bronchos will prepare to face Walters again on Friday.

This time the game will mean much more, with a trip to the district final and regional play on the line. It isn’t inconceivable for senior Chelsea Nunley that the Bronchos (5-13) could win the district with back-to-back victories versus Walters (12-9) and Minco (7-13), but her team will have to improve its play.

“I want everybody to step up and give it everything they’ve got,” Nunley said. “We’re trying to figure out what we can do better to beat them.”

Coach Chad Weldon likes that his team has that confidence and reiterated that a district title isn’t out of reach. It will help that both games will be held in Central High’s new gym.

“We get to shoot in this gym more than anybody,” Weldon said. “We’ll have our fans behind us, and I hope it puts us over the edge.”

Despite the familiarity of being in their own gym and facing an opponent for the second time, Weldon still thinks there will be some surprises on Friday. He said he doubted that Walters showed its entire hand. However, it does help the girls’ confidence to take the game to the final buzzer.

“It kind of shows the girls that we are just as good as they are,” Weldon said.
