In its final game of the Marlow summer softball league, the Velma-Alma Lady Comets looked as ready for the regular season as they’ll ever be Monday.
The team showed patience at the plate and strength on the mound while earning a 4-1 victory in three innings against Ninnekah at Southwest Park in Marlow.
“We’re having some good at bats now, we drew a lot of walks today,” V-A head coach Lacy Darity said. “We battled at the plate and that was encouraging.”
Bases on balls proved to be the key Monday, as three of the Lady Comets runs came from bases loaded walks.
After a scoreless first inning, V-A got on the board first in the bottom of the second.
Shaylee Jensen got things going at the start of the inning with a fly ball that landed in deep left field for a single. After another single and a walk, Velma-Alma brought home its first runs with a walk and an RBI single. The inning’s third run once again came from a base on balls, with Sidney Lewis bringing in a run with a bases loaded walk. One batter later, Jessie Anderson repeated the same feat to give V-A a 4-0 lead. .
Nikki Wright kept her opponent at bay from the start, allowing just one run and striking out five in three innings of work to earn the win.
Velma-Alma will return to action Friday at the Duncan Festival.
