DUNCAN — It’s the weekend every high school wrestler works for all season long: the state tournament in Oklahoma City.

Starting on Friday, all the preparation and practice will be put to use as 12 Stephens County wrestlers look for gold at the State Fairgrounds Arena.

“I think all five of my wrestlers have a shot at placing this weekend,” Duncan coach Kevin Kelly said. “If they wrestle well then they could end up in the finals. It’s not unheard of to get all your wrestlers in the finals. These are my go-to guys, and they have all placed at every tournament we have been to this season.”

MarkWae Sanders (113) enters this year’s showcase hungry for another state title after finishing second in 2012. He enters with a 34-1 record on the season and will face Piedmont’s Michael Lopez in the first round.

While Jett Gray (120) might be the four seed out of the west bracket, he is already all too familiar with his first round opponent in Donald Cannon from McAlester, having split two matches with him this season. Gray enters with an overall record of 26-13.

Connor Kelly (145) will be taking on Kaleb Hinds of Claremore, with Kelly owning a pinfall victory over Hinds from earlier this season. Kelly owns a 31-7 record this season.

“Last week at regionals made me see that I needed to work harder because it is the state tournament,” Connor said. “Everyone is 0-0 when you get to state. I need to come out and be calm and wrestle my best.”

Christian Carnahan (152) might not have faced his opponent in Shawnee’s Matt Daniel this season, he has placed above him at every tournament. Carnahan sports a record of 30-9 entering this weekend.

Cameron McGill (220) also enters the state competition owning a pinfall victory over his first round opponent in Blaise Gorges of Durant. McGill has a record of 29-9 this season.

Class 3A State Wrestling

In the Class 3A bracket, both wrestlers from Marlow and Comanche will be looking for state titles this weekend.

At 113 pounds, Corey Williams of Comanche (14-13) will meet Briar Stopp from Newkirk (33-6) in a first round matchup.

Marlow’s Logan Knox (27-10) will also be looking for gold in the 113 pound bracket as he drew Anthony Jacregui (31-4) of Tonkawa in the first round.

Comanche’s Ricky Kelly (126) will face off against Blake Avery (29-7) from Perkins-Tryon in a first round match. Kelly enters the state competition with an overall record of 24-9.

Marlow’s Chris Davis is listed as an alternate in the 126 pound division.

JonWayne Townsend (35-2) will try and become the first three-time state champion in Comanche wrestling history as he is the top seed in the 132 pound bracket and will meet Dakota Simerly (31-8) from Locust Grove in the first round.

Marlow’s Cody Scroggins (13-7) will try his luck in the 132 pound division as he faces Derick Shrum (48-5) from Jay High School in the first round.

Seth Scarbrough (32-9) of Marlow will try and halt the undefeated run of Berryhill’s Davey Dolan (31-0) in his first round match at 145 pounds.
