DUNCAN — If Tuesday night is an indication of things to come this season, then fans will be in for an exciting ride with the Duncan Lady Demons soccer team.

In their first home scrimmage of 2013, DHS battled back from 2-0 down to claim an exciting 4-3 victory over the Ada Lady Cougars at Halliburton Stadium.

“We had two starters out tonight, so considering that we played really good,” Duncan coach Delydia Gay said. “It took us a minute to figure everything out. We were down 2-0 and didn’t give up, and showed we can fight back. I’m really proud of how the girls made adjustments.”

Just a little under seven minutes before halftime, freshman Shai Johnson found herself in a one-on-one situation with the Ada goalie.

Johnson composed herself like a seasoned veteran and slotted home Duncan’s fourth goal of the half and her second of the game.

It was an exciting end to a pulsating half of soccer which saw DHS senior Courtney Moore also collect two goals, the second of hers which came from long distance and rippled the top right hand corner of the net, making the score 3-3 at the 37:21 mark.

Johnson’s first goal came with a bit of luck as her dipping shot deceived Ada’s goalkeeper and trickled into the net after a friendly bounce, which cut the deficit to 2-1.

Moore’s first goal of the night came off an error by the Ada keeper as the ball had just enough momentum to get over the line and tie the game at 2-2.

Ada found itself up 2-0 just nine minutes into the half, before taking the lead at 3-2 off a corner kick.

“There’s going to be mistakes and we’ll give up goals that are soft sometimes,” Gay said. “Unfortunately we weren’t able to finish any of our shots in the second half. But, we had some very good looks. It’s just preseason though so we need to keep improving on this.”

Senior Madison Williams put on a clinic in the second half with many impressive saves, including several one-on-one stops which preserved the Lady Demons lead on the night.

Duncan will be back in action Saturday for a scrimmage on the road against Chickasha.
