Stephens County, we have an upset alert.
And the culprits are a group of Comets, V-A Lady Comets that is.
Thursday night saw head coach Jerry Garrett and his squad pull off the upset in Macomb as the Velma-Alma Lady Comets defeated No. 9 New Lima 56-48. to book their spot in the Area tournament.
“This was an unbelievable team effort,” Garrett said via telephone interview. “We just gave a great effort on both sides of the ball tonight.”
Going into the halftime break, the Lady Comets held a slim 24-20 advantage, thanks in part to an 11-5 run in the first quarter.
V-A and New Lima (21-6) were even in the third quarter, both scoring 14 points before the Lady Comets won the fourth with an 18-14 scoreline.
Ariah Johnson led the scoring for the Lady Comets (19-6) with 19 points followed by Teddi Southerland with 15 points and Kylee Saville with 13 points.

VELMA-ALMA 56 WETUMKA 49
Before his teams game against Wetumka, head coach Kenny Bare said he expected a challenge.
It turns out he was extremely right, but the Comets answered the call and survived with a 56-49 victory.
“It was a dogfight of a game from start to finish,” Bare said Thursday night via telephone. “Shooting 8-of-19 from the free throw line helped them (Wetumka) out a little. Dallen (Mercer) manned up for us tonight and really led us.”
After being down 12-11 at the end of the first quarter, the Comets stormed back to take a 26-25 lead going into halftime.
V-A (22-3) outscored Wetumka 30-24 in the second half to claim its spot in the Area tournament.
Dallen Mercer led the Comets with 31 points followed by Jaz Gayanich with eight points. L.L. Humphreys scored five points on the night with Checotah Lynn putting in four points. Zac Cable and Conner Sullivan each put in three points.
V-A will face Pond Creek-Hunter Saturday night for the Regional title at 8 p.m. from Agra High School.
