Runners hit the road at Velma’s 5K

VELMA — Just as the sun crept up and before it got too hot, members of the Velma-Alma community spent their morning honoring one of its own with the third installment of what has become a yearly tradition.

The town hosted its third annual Mayor’s 5K Road Race, with runners from all over the state coming to run the event, which began at Velma-Alma High School.

“It’s impressive how our community always comes together for stuff. All of our sports, they’re always there,” Velma-Alma cross country coach and event coordinator Jerry Loveall said. “It’s always fun to see everyone come together, especially the former players

Former Velma-Alma cross country star Zach Johnson of the 35-39 year old group made the most of his return trip home, winning the men’s category with a time of 17:57.

The female division belonged to Jennifer Bivins, also of the 35-39 age group, with a time of 22:58.
