The Duncan boys golf team bounced back after a tough first round, playing better in the second round of the Class 5A state golf tournament at Fort Sill Golf Club Monday.
Duncan shot 319 as a team in the first round of 18 and 307 in the second round for a two-round total of 626. The Demons are 23 strokes behind first-place Tahlequah, 17 strokes behind second-place Shawnee and nine strokes behind third-place Tulsa Kelley.
Demon coach Lindy Welborn said it will be difficult to catch the top two, but believes the boys could jump into third with a strong third round.
“If we play really good, we can make it to third, but right now, that’s as good as we are able to do,” Welborn said. “The others are just too far ahead.”
Blake Graham stayed consistent in both rounds with 73 and 72. His two-day total of 145 puts him four strokes behind leader Jake Johnson of Tahlequah and three strokes behind second-place Trent Meisel of Lawton MacArthur. Welborn praised Graham for his strong play.
Meanwhile, Logan Harris and Christian Dructor each shot 81 the first 18, then improved in the second round to 72 and 79. Tyler Albin overcame a slow start on the first 18 with 86 to earn 78 on the second 18. Carson Hogstad shot 84 and 85. Welborn hoped the golfers can have a good showing in the final round of play Tuesday.
“Hopefully we will be able to put it together as a team and jump one more spot,” he said.
