Dealing with two rain delays on a windy day, Marlow boys golf played one of its best rounds to finish fifth after the first day of the Class 3A state championship Monday.
Coach Stephen Thomas expected to have trouble competing for the top two spots at Lakeview Golf Course, but he is content with his team’s position, just eight strokes back from the third-place spot. Because of the rain delays, the Outlaws weren’t able to finish their second round, meaning they will have to complete that and the third round Tuesday.
“We did better than I expected,” Thomas said. “If we finish the second round OK, then we should be able to make it up in the third round.”
Velma-Alma boys golf had a more difficult time dealing with the weather conditions in the class 2A tournament at Oakwood Country Club in Enid. The Comets shot 365 and 354 to finish in 10th. It wasn’t the start coach Greg Gothard wanted.
“We’ve just got to go out there and shoot what we’re capable of shooting, which is around 335 or 335,” Gothard said. “If we do that then we’ll be satisfied, but we just got ourselves behind the eight ball, shooting as high as we did.”
