Girls tennis second at state tourney

DUNCAN — It came down to the final match.

The Duncan girls tennis players made the finals in all four divisions of the Class 5A state tournament and needed to win two to repeat as state championships.

It came down to Alex Bowers and Cascia Hall’s Peyton Jennings, who has committed to University of Arkansas. Their finals match went three hours with Jennings winning 6-0, 0-6, 7-5.

Duncan’s Marisa Moore won No. 2 singles, and both doubles teams lost. Jennings’ win put Tulsa’s Cascia Hall ahead of Duncan for first.

Although a tough loss for Bowers, Demon coach Phil Barnes had nothing but praise for the junior.

“She gave us a chance to play for a state championship,” Barnes said. “It took a lot of character and a lot of guts on her part.”

Barnes said Bowers and Jennings each had muscle cramps during the match and trainers were brought to assist. Although Jennings won, Bowers had won the admiration of every person who watched the match.

“They were cheering like crazy for her,” Barnes said.

Moore beat Cascia Hall’s Kimmi Koors in the semifinals, then beat Heritage Hall’s Erin Holsted in the finals.

The No. 1 doubles team of Sydney Hendricks and Carly Kirkland won a tough semifinal match against Heritage Hall before the finals loss to Cascia Hall. No. 2 doubles team Aubrey Mouser and Jordan Clauson won a close semifinal against Carl Albert, then lost to Cascia Hall in the finals.

Barnes liked how hard his players battled and credited Cascia Hall for playing good tennis.

“I’m proud of the kids,” he said. “We fought and had a chance. I don’t feel like we lost, but that Cascia Hall beat us and we fought them to the end.”

  • Duran Duran has one obstacle left: State

Midway through her sophomore year, Comanche’s Alexis Duran had her athletic life taken away from her, but this spring she got it back in spectacular fashion.
An ACL tear in basketball kept the three-sport star out for a full year before she got to compete again in track as a junior. Duran didn’t just show up and run, she pushed for medals and came just shy of making the state tournament, finishing one spot away by a tenth of a second.

Should the date for The World's Largest Garage Sale be changed from the third weekend in July to sometime in October to take advantage of cooler weather like we had this past weekend?

No. It's better in the summer cause kids are out of school.
Yes. More shoppers would come during nice fall weather.
Either time is fine.
