The Duncan Banner
It wasn’t that different from the last time the Lady Demons met the Lady Longhorns.
The Duncan High School softball team last met Lone Grove — one of Class 4A’s top teams — during a tournament in Durant more than a week ago, winning 1-0.
The Lady Demons hosted the Lady Longhorns Tuesday and, once again, it was Duncan taking the 1-0 victory.
“Lone Grove is solid defensively and they run the bases well,” said Duncan coach Robert Cowan.
He added he didn’t think the defense was sharp enough Tuesday, but the two errors the Lady Demons had didn’t affect the game’s outcome.
The Lady Demons managed just three hits off Lone Grove pitcher Maoi Baughman. “She locates the ball well, but we should be able to hit better than we did,” Cowan said.
Still, the Lady Demons got key defensive plays when they needed them, along with another gem from freshman Corrina Rivas. She held the Lady Longhorns to three hits and struck out seven.
Lone Grove threatened to get on the board in the bottom of the seventh after Harley McCutchen and Alli Bolles each singled, then advanced on Tanner Gray’s sacrifice to right field with one out. But Rivas struck out Beth Hollum to end the game.
“We tried to bring up the level of competition,” said Cowan about the Lady Demons’ schedule this season. The Lady Demons have played Lone Grove, Marlow and Blanchard this season — all teams considered among the best in their classifications.
And then there’s Chickasha, who Duncan will face on the road this Thursday. The game was postponed from a week earlier because of rain. Duncan is assured of at least ssecond in the district and thus host a regional tournament game, but a win Thursday by at least two runs could give the Lady Demons the district title, Cowan said.
