With the search for Duncan’s new girls basketball coach concluding Tuesday, one of its own will be back in town with one mission: restore the former glory of the Lady Demons basketball team.
The Duncan Board of Education agreed to name Grant Givens as the Lady Demons new coach for the 2013-14 school year after meeting in an executive session Tuesday night. Givens was employed in the Duncan system as an assistant boys basketball coach during the 2010-2011 season.
Since leaving Duncan Schools, Givens had served at the head girls basketball coach for Frederick High School. He said he’s ready to return to the Duncan area and to continue instilling the love of basketball in the new generation of students.
“This is where I’m from,” Givens said. “I’m ready to be back here, to see familiar faces.”
Givens is a 2001 Empire High School graduate, but he spent his junior year at Duncan High. In high school, basketball was one of the many sports he pursued, as he also played football and track.
Givens attended college at Cameron University, which kept him close to the area he grew up in. His parents and various other family members still live in the Duncan and Stephens County community.
In his last year assisting with boys basketball at Duncan High School, the team reached the state tournament, a high point in his career in Givens’ career. He said there is a lot of potential to move the girls basketball team into a successful direction.
“When I was in school, Duncan’s girls basketball was kind of the standard,” Givens said. “I want to get them back to that, to be a little more consistent.”
It was Givens’ high school years that helped to establish his love of basketball. He played basketball for much of his high school career, with the exception of his junior year at DHS. That year, he focused on football and track.
He is an Oklahoma City Thunder supporter and enjoys watching some college basketball on TV.
Aside from his coaching duties at Frederick, Givens also teaches elementary physical education. His teaching assignment in the Duncan School District has not yet been determined. Givens said he is able to teach middle school science.
During Tuesday’s board meeting, Givens thanked the school board for giving him the opportunity to return to his hometown.
