DUNCAN — The Duncan Demons’ quest for their first ever Chisholm Trail Holiday Shootout title started out a bit rough, but at the end of Thursday night they were ultimately where they wanted to be: In the semifinals.

The Demons committed 23 turnovers as they tried to work off the rust that built up over Christmas, but with a 14-2 run to close out the third quarter, Duncan dismissed U.S. Grant 58-49 in the final game of Thursday’s opening round.

Duncan (4-3) was viewed as a heavy favorite against the Generals (0-4), and as the Demons built an 11-4 lead, the game seemed to be going according to the script. U.S. Grant, though, tied it at 11-all early in the second quarter, and briefly took a 13-11 lead.

The Demons quickly reclaimed the lead but couldn’t shake the Generals until late in the third quarter, when they stretched their 28-25 advantage to go into the fourth quarter up 42-27.

U.S. Grant cut the deficit to six points with just over a minute to play but would get no closer.

Senior guard Cade Baldwin led Duncan with 23 points and five rebounds, while senior Jack Braught had 13 points, seven rebounds and four steals and junior

Je’Mario McCoy added seven points.

Duncan faces Guthrie today at 5:30 p.m.
