DUNCAN — Things went well until the final game.

The Duncan High School softball team shut out its first four opponents in a tournament at Durant Friday and Saturday.

But when the Lady Demons faced the host team for the championship, the defense didn’t hold up. Duncan committed four errors in a 7-1 loss to the Cougars Saturday.

“Corrina (Rivas) didn’t pitch bad,” said Lady Demon coach Robert Cowan. “But they’d get a couple baserunners on, hit a routine ball and we’d drop it.”

Cowan added the Lady Demons left the bases loaded a couple of times and couldn’t get clutch hits to bring in runners.

The Lady Demons had seven hits against the Cougars but managed just one run. K.K. Williams and Kortney Brown each had two singles.

Before the final game, the Lady Demons had been on a roll, shutting out four teams.

First came a 1-0 victory against Lone Grove Friday. Rivas struck out 12 batters while giving up four hits with no walks.

Duncan scored its only run in the first inning, after Berkley Faulkner doubled, advanced on Autumn Parker’s sacrifice bunt, then scored on a sacrifice fly to right field by Williams.

The Lady Demons won their second game Friday, beating Oklahoma City Western High 8-0. Autumn Parker threw a one-hitter with three strikeouts.

Faulkner had a two-run homer in the second inning and added a single. Getting two hits apiece were Parker,  Rivas, Brown and Kennedy Stewart.

The Lady Demons opened play Saturday with a 2-0 win against Rattan. Duncan didn’t get a hit until the fourth inning when Faulkner singled, and didn’t score its runs until the sixth, with Williams doubling, Parker reaching first when hit by a pitch, then Rivas driving in both baserunners.

Rivas was strong on the mound as well, striking out 14 batters with three hits and three walks.

The Lady Demons then beat Dixon 5-0. Rivas threw a one-hitter with 11 strikeouts.

Seven players had singles for Duncan. Falon Howell and Jenny Rather each had two RBIs.

The Lady Demons are 21-4 overall and have a busy schedule this week. They host Altus Monday, then host Noble Tuesday, before heading to Chickasha Thursday for a key district game.
