DUNCAN — The Lady Demons were right there with one of the best teams in the state.

The Duncan High School softball team trailed 6-1 after five innings of play in Tuesday’s home game against Chickasha, but then rallied in the sixth inning to close the gap.

The Lady Demons couldn’t quite overcome the deficit, but still, coach Robert Cowan had much to be proud of, despite the 6-4 loss to the Lady Chicks.

“If they are the best, we don’t have far to go,” Cowan said.

Indeed, the Lady Demons found a way to get back into the game despite a five-run deficit. After K.K. Williams walked and Corrina Rivas singled with one out, senior Jenny Rather came through with a clutch double to bring in both baserunners.

Sara McCormick then singled and Falon Howell was hit by a pitch, loading the bases. Senior Kourtney Brown then hit a roller past second base to bring in another run.

But Chickasha pitcher Kelsi Gore struck out Berkley Faulkner and Autumn Parker to get out of the jam.

“We were right where we needed ito be -- we had our best hitter at the plate with the bases loaded,” Cowan said.

The Lady Chicks’ put five runs across the plate in the top of the third inning. Gore was solid on the mound but even better at the plate, going 4-for-4 with a double for the game.

Duncan brought in a run in the bottom of the third after Brown reached first base on an error and ultimately scored on a fielder’s choice.

Chickasha’s other run came in the top of the fifth after a sacrifice fly by Brook Buens.

“They’re one of the best teams in any class, maybe the best team in any class,” Cowan said regarding Chickasha. “But I know we are a good team, better than we were last year. I expect good things.”

Lady Demon pitcher Corrina Rivas gave up 11 hits but zero walks. She also struck out five.

Berkley Faulkner was 2-for-4 on the day and Sara McCormick was 2-for-2.

The Lady Demons will head to Del City Thursday for a district doubleheader, then have another key district matchup as they head to Lawton MacArthur this Monday.
