DUNCAN — It hasn’t been easy for the Duncan swimmers to get a lot of practice time in the pool or meets held.

The good news is that a local business has stepped forward to allow the Demons a place to practice.

The swimmers are practicing at the indoor pool at the Quality Inn-Duncan. Duncan Athletic Director Burl White said that Duncan swim coach Andrew Bowers spoke to motel staff and got permission to use the pool during the Demons’ usual afternoon practice time.

Although it is a smaller pool than what the Demons are used to, Bowers said he is glad the motel staff stepped forward to help.

“The people at the Quality Inn have been beyond nice to work with, allowing us to use the pool,” Bowers said.

White was also appreciative of the Quality Inn stepping forward. He said that while it’s not a perfect situation, “it is the best we have right now.”

The Demons usually hold practice and meets at the Simmons Center swimming pool, but maintenance issues that are being addressed have kept the Demons from using that facility.

Combine that with weather conditions affecting travel, and the Demons didn’t get to have as many meets as expected to open the season. So far, they had just one meet, a Nov. 14 home meet against Del City and Carl Albert.

The schedule will again be altered, with all Demon home meets now on the road. They will head to Chickasha Thursday to face the host Chicks and Heritage Hall. Given how long it has been since their last meet, Bowers said the Demons are almost like “starting the season over.”

Still, the swim coach said the swimmers are keeping positive attitudes about the situation.

“I’m really surprised with how pleasant they have been,” Bowers said. “It shows what good senior leadership we have.”

Senior Damon Demar admitted that it was tough not having as much practice time in the pool or as many meets as in previous seasons.

“It’s definitely frustrating,” Demar said. “We try to practice, but all this time, we’ve only had one meet out of six scheduled. This is the first year I’ve ever had a canceled meet, and we’ve already had five.”

But Demar appreciates the Quality Inn staff’s willingness to allow the Demons to use the pool.

“I’m really thankful, because it’s my senior year,” he said. “We haven’t been able to swim much.”

It may take a little time for the swimmers to get back into meet shape, but Demar believes they will be ready for the meets ahead. Most of all, he is glad to have the chance to get into the pool.

“I’m just happy to swim regularly,” Demar said. “I definitely want to compete, but it’s just nice to get back into the pool again.”
