Duncan Athletic Director Burl White hopes to get the Demon head football coaching position filled as quickly as possible.
The Duncan school district has set a deadline of Jan. 17 for interested candidates to submit applications. White said that the district has already received quite a bit of interest in the head football coaching position.
“We are taking applications right now, and we probably have a dozen or more in hand,” White said. “We’ve had several others who have inquired about the opening. We are not going to have trouble getting a good group of candidates.”
Once the deadline for applications passes, the district will form a committee to review them and select candidates to interview. White will be part of that committee, along with other school administrators. White said he expects the committee will select five or six candidates to interview.
There will be several factors that will be considered for any person interested in the job, White said. One of them is whether or not a teaching position will be available for the candidate. Another is how quickly the candidate will be able to report to the district and to meet with the players.
“We want him to have the opportunity to get the feel for the kids we have, early enough that it doesn’t put anybody behind,” White said.
White said he hopes to have the position filled as quickly as possible, while ensuring the right person for the job is hired.
“We don’t want to string this out for a long time,” he said. “Whoever takes the job has to consider the things they will need to take care of.”
The Demon head football coaching job opened up after Jim Holloway was not retained in the position. A statement White issued in December said Holloway had been “reassigned.” Holloway, a 41-year football coaching veteran, spent nine years with Duncan and posted a 54-46 overall record.
