More activity in area sports

Hoops season starts this week

After a week of relative inactivity, the area sports docket will pick up this week. Area basketball teams will tip off this week, joining the Duncan swimming team and the Velma-Alma football team as sports enthusiast options.

Velma-Alma will travel to Okeene Saturday night for a second-round playoff match-up. V-A defeated Hinton 31-21 Friday night to set up the game against a Whippet team that is ranked No. 1 in Class A and defeated Watonga 43-8.

The Duncan swim team has looked impressive in its first two meets and will look to extend that run on Thursday when it hosts Moore and Ada at 4 p.m.

The Duncan basketball teams will continue their preparation for the upcoming season with scrimmages this week. Both teams will be in action on Tuesday as the Demons will host Walters at 3:15 p.m. while the Lady Demons will be on the road to take on Bethany.

The Duncan girls will also scrimmage at Comanche at 2:30 p.m. Thursday while the boys will host Marlow at 9 a.m. Saturday.

Duncan, Marlow, Comanche and Velma-Alma are scheduled to start their regular seasons on Dec. 2. The rest of the area basketball teams will be gearing up for some pre-Thanksgiving action with Bray-Doyle leading the way.

The Donkey basketball teams will lead the way for area teams when they host Lawton Christian at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday. The other three area schools will jump into the season headfirst on Friday with two scheduled to play at home.

Empire will host Geronimo at 6:30 p.m. while Central High will host Chattanooga at the same time. Waurika will start the season on the road when it takes a short trip to take on Jefferson County rival Ryan.

Those that are unable to take in hoops action on Friday will be given a second chance on Saturday. Central High will travel to Waurika while Bray-Doyle will be at Sterling.

Basketball is not the only winter sport that will be kicking off this weekend. Wrestling fans can get their fill on Saturday at the Marlow Open.

Those that don’t have the energy to get need look no further than the remote control as Oklahoma and Texas Tech face-off on Saturday night.
