No problem for V-A

— The Velma-Alma Comets rushed for 292 yards on 29 carries in the first half on their way to a 46-8 win over the Rush Springs Redskins Friday Night at Joe Tunnell Stadium-Lewis Field.
The Comets finished with more than 400 yards rushing and 500 yards of total offense in the game.
In stark contrast, the Redskins had 36 yards of total offense in the first half, as Velma-Alma took advantage of that discrepancy to take a 40-0 halftime edge. The Redskins had 156 total yards of offense at the end of the game.
After the game, Velma-Alma head coach Greg Gothard explained why his starting groups were on the field in the third quarter.
“We’ve been running our guys to death, but when you aren’t playing in a game, you can’t simulate a game situation. What concerns me is that we are going to be pushed to the limit next week (against Healdton),” Gothard said.
Velma-Alma senior Trenten Files had 120 yards for the game, all in the first half, and junior Tanner Jenkins finished with 204 yards on 11 carries, including a 94-yard scoring run on the Comets’ second offensive play of the third quarter with 5:21 remaining in the period for a 46-0 edge.
It wasn’t just the running game that was effective for Velma-Alma. Senior quarterback Dustin Sloan was 5-for-5 passing for 73 yards and three scoring passes.
Dillon Dennis was 1-for-1 passing for 23 yards and a score.
Junior Peyton Presgrove was busy on the night with two touchdown receptions in the first quarter one of 17 yards from Sloan and 23-yarder from Dennis on a wide receiver pass with no time left in the opening stanza.
Presgrove finished the night with four receptions for 74 yards.
In the second quarter, V-A sophomore tailback Tyler Smith scored on a 43-yard run at the 9:48 mark. Senior Cord Gothard added the extra point.
Two plays later, Dennis picked off Rush Springs quarterback Sheldon Glass and returned it 60 yards for a 26-0 Comet advantage. It was Dennis’ second interception return for a touchdown in as many games.
Jenkins scored from 36 yards out with 5:16 left to play, and it was 40-0 after Presgrove pulled in a 15-yard scoring reception from Sloan to help V-A to a 40-0 edge at the intermission.
Rush Springs’ lone score came at the 9:23 mark when Collin Cox finished off a five-play drive with a four-yard run.
The Comets improved to 7-2 on the season, 5-1 in District A-4 with the win. They will wrap up the season in a game against Healdton for second place in the district. The Bulldogs knocked off Elmore City-Pernell 21-20 to improve to 8-1 overall and 7-1 in district.
